50 YEARS OF SERVICE

Bessie H. Aldrich (1896-1980) formed the present day Portsmouth Humane Society in 1947. The Society is celebrating 50 years of service to the community in 1997.

Portsmouth Humane Society, Inc. is a private non-profit, tax deductible, charitable organization. We are not part of the City of Portsmouth, but we work closely together. We exist mainly on donations and the generosity of people. Membership is available to all at annual dues of $10/single; $20/family; $50 Contibuting; $100 Kennel Club; $500 Zoo Keeper Club (more is always grateful).

Portsmouth Humane Society is the only private shelter in the area that pays for the vetrinarian care of injured/sick stray animals taken to a vet by the City's Animal Control.

HUMANE EDUCATION

The Society has a Humane Educator on staff. The Humane Educator goes to schools and organizations to lecture and for presentations to raise the awareness of living with animals. We are also actively enrolled in "Pet Therapy" and go to schools, retirement homes/groups and hospitals.

CRUELTY AND NEGLECT

Please report any neglect or cruelty to your local Animal Control, SPCA, or Humane Society. Portsmouth Humane Society was recently involved in the successful prosecution of a person beating a dog with a 2x4. The person received a year in jail and maxed out on the fine (Class 1 Misdemeanor). Unfortunately, the neighbors did not report the problem soon enough to save the dog. In Virginia it is a felony to fight dogs, in North Carolina--less than twenty miles away, it is a misdemeanor.
